Buck's fever has gone down and he is off the breathing machine!! His doctor says this old fellow from Kentucky must be made of iron! He was laughing at his wife and myself as we buzzed around him,..making sure that everything was..JUST RIGHT.. and that he was comfortable with everything!
I guess it is unusual for a man of eighty years old to survive peritonitus! I would guess that it would be unusual for anyone his age to survive the major surgery,..that he had to under go to treat the peritonitus and then,..the blood filled lungs. God must want this man around for something!
What a wonderful person..this one deaf man is!! I am so privilaged to know him!! His first word after this latest crisis were, "Ahh! My poor friends! you all look so tired!! Go rest yourselves!!"
Almost..almost losing.. a person of this much value in my life and in the lives of everyone else around him, life..has presented me with a personal ephiphany,..I will not comment as yet on this new discovery I have made about human nature, but I will say that it has to do with the relative value of human beings in their respective relationships to each other.
My Deaf friends welcomed me back at the picnic for SHH as if it had not been ten years since they had seen me! It might have been only the other day! I have not even sent Christmas cards to some of them recently and yet the moment that Debby and Jane and some others saw me that day,..I have a place to sit at their tables and all of the "catching up" to do that goes to meeting old friends!!
The thing that really touched me was that I had to share all of my news with them first. The old "hospitality" is still there!! These people care about each other as human beings and not as a source of popularity or jobs or finance!! And I don't care if any of them are reading this blog,..I must say such a thing in a public place as I have recently found out that a blog is a public place!! And,..I wish to do you,..Jane,..and you,..Debbie..a small honor to acknowledge your faithfulness as people, who really care about each other!!
I heard by way of the "grapevine' that Jill would have come to the picnic,..if she had known that I would be there!! Jill is one of the Deaf women,..who had her first child back in the nasty seventies,..with her hands tied down with leather straps..because she was deaf!! To hell with the fact that she was working on her master's degeree in social work at the time at A---- University just north of where I live!! The hospital policy at the time was to tie down the young deaf woman, who was about to deliver!! I am going to seak Jill out and see if I can get her permission to tell her story in my next book!!
I am still digging out newspaper articles about Nellie! I didn't realize that I had so many!! Someone is going to be a VERY busy person, trying to put this all together!!
I also dug out a book of my old poetry!! Gads! Was I really that sloppily sentimental when I lived with Nellie and her friends!????! Wheew! I certainly have been cured of a lot of that sort of feeling!! I have been cured by "experts!"
