I hope that this is spelled correctly and does not appear too ignorant. I know that some of the letters are not properly marked and that makes me feel dumb, but the computer from which I am working does not permiot the proper marks over the letters!
I was looking at "Das Dicke Buch" as opposed to the "Das Dunne Buchlein." The "Thick Book" is used in worship services. The "thin book" is used by the 'teeners' and the young folk for their frolics on Sunday evenings. Heh! I cannot even imagine some of my local friends trying to plow their way throw this wordy conglomeration of religious thoughts!! The opening title of "Das Dicke Buch" reads :
Das Ausbund
das is
Etliche schone
Christliche Lieder,
Wie sie in dem Gefangnis zu Passau in dem
Schloss von den Schweizer-Bruden und
von andren rechtglaubigen Christen
hin und her gedichtet worden.
Allen und jeden Chreisten,
Welcher Religion sie sein,
unpartheiisch sehr nutzlich.
Nebst einem Anghang von sechs Lieden.
(Poor translation for the "non-Germanically-oriented." If gela is reading this,..I hope that she does not howl with laughter at me for my very poor grammar and spelling!!):
Pretty Christian songs as they were now and then made (created?) in the jail at Passau in the castle by Bretheren and a few other orthodox Christians. To each and every Christian, of whatever religion, impartially and useful. (?)
I will not try to describe the rest of the book. The length of the title gives on an idea of the contents of the rest of the book! Needless to say,..because of the length of the songs, repetition in them and just general vagueness about their reference points,..these "songs" will never make it to the "top forty!!" I am GLAD that certain things..just by way of what they are..can still be held "traditional" and "sacred!!"
These songs were written in the sixteen and seventh centuries. Usually one song can't even be sung in a full church service!! Heh! I can just imagine what one would sound like if attempted by one of Shawn's favorite non-musicians:
Snoopy Dawgy Dawg!
